SUJET : L'avocat Paul Biegler a si peu de causes à défendre qu'il passe le plus clair de son temps à la pêche. Une affaire pourtant se présente. Le lieutenant Manion, dans un accès de jalousie, a déchargé son revolver sur un certain Barney, propriétaire d'un hôtel. Manion prétend que ce dernier a violé son épouse, Laura. Biegler est convaincu qu'il dit la vérité. Mais la police ne le croit pas. Biegler mène son enquête et s'aperçoit peu à peu que les comportements passés de Manion et de Laura risquent de les desservir face au jury. L'affaire s'annonce d'autant plus mal qu'il faudra affronter le redoutable procureur Claude Dancer…
