SUJET : La société américaine TraviCom a lancé huit de ses hommes à la recherche d'un vaste gisement diamantifère qui serait situé dans la mythique cité de Zinj, au coeur de la chaîne des Virungas, à la frontière du Congo et du Rwanda.Le chef de l'expédition, Charles Travis, et ses compagnons ont à peine franchi l'enceinte de Zinj qu'ils sont massacrés par une bande de gorilles d'une espèce inconnue.R.B.Travis, le directeur de TraviCom, qui compte sur ces pierres chimiquement pures pour s'assurer une position dominante dans le marché des télécommunications, décide d'envoyer sur place sa spécialiste la plus aguerrie, Karen, l'ex-fiancée de Charles.Celle-ci est bientôt rejointe par un jeune primatologue, Peter Elliot, et sa «protégée», Amy, un gorille femelle qui maîtrise la langue des singes…
