SUJET : La frontière nord-ouest de l'Inde en 1879. Les deux recrues, Arthur Drake et Edward Millington, rejoignent le 20e régiment de cavalerie légère où ils vont débuter leur carrière militaire. Drake se rejouit à l'idée de suivre les traces de son père dans l'univers d'honneur et de tradition qui caractérise la vie militaire britannique, alors que Millington est fermement décidé à se faire renvoyer, de façon déshonorante ou non, à la première occasion. En arrivant au fort, Millington comprend que c'est Marjorie, la veuve du très estimé capitaine Scarlett, qui lui donnera le moyen de s'échapper du régiment. Très convoitée, la jolie veuve ne se laisse courtiser que par les officiers de grade supérieur.Millington l'importune intentionnellement et semble près d'arriver à ses fins lorsqu'un événement inattendu vient bouleverser ses projets…
