SUJET : La Nouvelle Orléans en 1951, à l'âge d'or des feuilletons radiphoniques. Pedro Carmichaël est un scénariste brillant et mystérieux mais aussi probablement fou. Il est engagé par la radio WXBU. En peu de temps, Pedro parvient à redresser le taux d'écoute de la station grâce à son feuilleton "Kings of the garden district" qui est un énorme succès. Carmichaël se considère comme un grand artiste et est à l'image de ses personnages. En reproduisant la vie privée de ses collaborateurs dans les moindres détails, il suscite de violente réactions. À la station de radio, Martin Loader, un jeune auteur promis à un brillant avenir, devient involontairement une source d'inspiration pour Pedro. En effet, Martin est amoureux de Julia, sa tante par alliance, une femme très séduisante de trente-cinq ans qui a déjà divorcé à deux reprises. Pedro souhaite sincèrement aider le couple, mais, tout en rapprochant Martin et Julia, il reproduit dans son feuilleton les scènes de leur intimité. Le scandale éclate dans leur entourage, occasionnant la rupture des deux amants…
