L'un des fugitifs est admis au service des urgences où officie le docteur Luthan, qui l'examine et l'interroge. Le malheureux a tout juste le temps de prononcer un mot - «triphase» - avant de mourir. Luthan cherche alors à en savoir plus, sans se laisser impressionner par les conseils de ses supérieurs. Plus tard, de la cocaïne est découverte dans son appartement, et il est immédiatement destitué. Il poursuit néanmoins son enquête et finit par retrouver le second fugitif. Peu à peu, ses investigations le mènent sur la piste du docteur Myrick, l'un des plus éminents médecins de l'établissement, prix Nobel de médecine…
