SUJET : Procédant à des essais en sous-marin atomique sous la calotte glaciaire du pôle nord, les passagers apprennent qu'un gigantesque anneau de feu encerclant la Terre va provoquer la fin du monde. Le savant amiral Nelson imagine aussitôt un moyen d'éviter la catastrophe en détruisant cette ceinture grâce à un missile. Mais cette solution est repoussée par les autorités de New York. Alors Nelson n'hésite plus; il va passer outre et le plus rapidement possible, le temps étant mesuré. Mais des sabotages se produisent à bord, une mutinerie est sur le point d'éclater. Néanmoins, le savant finira par obtenir gain de cause…
