SUJET : À Kansas City, en 1931, quelques petits gangsters minables, prenant d'énormes risques, kidnappent une riche héritière, Barbara Blandish, ainsi que son fiancé qu'ils tuent. Leur forfait accompli, les bandits se terrent à la campagne mais une bande beaucoup plus expérimentée, le gang Grissom, massacre les kidnappeurs et séquestre la prisonnière chez Ma Grissom, une vieille femme tyrannique. Slim, gangster névrosé et maniaque de la violence, fait de Barbara sa maitresse.Lorsque la rançon est versée, tout le monde est d'accord pour tuer Miss Blandish, à l'exception de Slim qui s'y oppose formellement.Mais la débâcle est proche et l'avenir incertain…
