SUJET : Michael Burgess est professeur d'histoire au collège de Sayeville, en Caroline du Nord.Ses vacances commencent par une querelle avec Gretchen, son amie, au sujet de la régularisation de leur relation.Cependant, Michael doit accueillir l'équipe de cinéma venue en ville pour tourner un long métrage, inspiré par le très sérieux ouvrage historique qu'il a consacré à la révolution américaine.Parmi les comédiens, il reconnaît Elliott James, un de ses acteurs favoris, et la jolie Faith Healy.Cette dernière doit incarner l'héroïne Mary Slocumb, un personnage auquel Michael s'était beaucoup attaché en écrivant son livre.L'actrice s'est identifiée à son rôle de telle manière que l'historien ne peut s'empêcher d'en tomber immédiatement amoureux…
